The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority manages the development of affordable housing for the city's low-income residents. The current project, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) enabled them to open a brand new 60-unit, three-story apartment complex for the elderly. In order to qualify, residents must be 62 years old or older with income not exceeding $21,150 per year.
The apartments are handicap accessible, energy efficient and smoke free. They are located within walking distance of stores and restaurants since many senior citizens no longer drive.
This is not the first affordable housing project Mishawaka has completed. In 2011, the city received $305,482 from the Affordable Housing Program of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis to build a 32 apartment complex for senior citizens. In 2003 the city purchased and renovated a former school building which they converted into apartments for low-income seniors.
In addition, the city offers a first-time homebuyer program through the Department of Community Development for low-income families whose income does not exceed 80% of the Area Median Income.
