The Great Recession has hit families hard everywhere. It has been especially difficult for working mothers who are in the low-income groups. They have only themselves to depend upon to feed their families. So, what's a mother to do?
Why many working mothers are in poverty
About 4.1 million low-income families are headed by working mothers who have 8.5 million children, according to a report by Working Poor Families Project. Unfortunately, the number has increased rather than decreased since 2007, rising from 54 percent in 2007 to 58 percent in 2012. Many lack the skills needed to get higher-paying jobs and are often in jobs that not only pay less but often do not offer health care benefits.
How some states are helping
Maryland and Vermont have led the way in promoting equal pay for women by rewriting state laws. Connecticut also stepped up to the plate in 2011 to ensure that not only women, but other workers be given a minimum amount of paid sick leave.
Thanks also to the states of Arkansas, Kentucky, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin who have established educational support programs for working mothers where they can learn more skills that will help them get better-paying jobs. Mississippi is lending their support by setting up a Dropout Recovery Fund for community colleges that serve young adults who need to get their high school diploma.
Better access to healthcare
In addition, with the expansion of Medicaid in 26 states and the District of Columbia, more low-income working women will have access to needed affordable health care under the Affordable Care Act.
