Scholarships Available For Low Income Students in These 5 States

Low income students

More and more American families are struggling to find ways to pay for their children's college education. Not all college-bound students are going to qualify for merit-based scholarships. Fortunately, there are many need-based scholarships available in many states for students from low-income families.

What is a low-income scholarship?

Low-income scholarships are designed to help students from low-income families who otherwise cannot pay for a college education. Many states award grants to low- and middle-income families to help pay for college costs at institutions within their state or to students residing in a specific state or city. Each state has different guidelines and requirements, but all of them are based on the family's annual income and assets. The great part about these awards is that they do not have to be paid back.

5 states that offer low-income scholarships
  1. Houston, Texas - consider the George and Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation undergraduate scholarship. It provides $18,000 over four years for up to 70 high school seniors who plan to attend any four-year college or university in the U.S.
  2. North Carolina - low-income students from North Carolina may qualify for a $12,000 four-year scholarship, or even a $9,000 scholarship if they are transferring from a community college, from the Golden Leaf Foundation. The foundation also offers scholarships to two-year colleges.
  3. Washington - low-income students from the state of Washington can apply for the Washington State Opportunity Scholarship if they plan to pursue a degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or the healthcare field. Up to 700 new scholarships of up to $7,500 are awarded.
  4. Georgia and South Carolina - more than 800 students each year will be awarded scholarships from the Watson-Brown Foundation. The scholarship provides both need-based and merit-based scholarships of $3,000 - $5,000 each to college students in parts of Georgia and South Carolina.
  5. Arizona - also helps low-income students with scholarships through the Arizona Community Foundation. More than 80 different funding sources help students who have financial need, disabilities or those raised in foster care to be able to attend college.

Other states that have similar programs include Florida and Hawaii.
