Low-Income Students Are Most Likely To Finish High School in These 7 States

Low-Income High School Students

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the number of high school students from poor families who are graduating from high school is on the rise. Between 2010-2013, high school graduation rates rose for poor students as well as African Americans, Latinos, American Indians, and students with disabilities.

Top 7 states

The overall high school graduation increase for all students between 2010-2013 was 2.4 percent. Among low-income students, however, the increase during that same period of time was 3.3 percent, according to data from the National Center For Education Statistics. The top 7 states with the highest graduation rates for all high school students are:

1) Texas
2) Arkansas
3) Tennessee
4) Kentucky
5) Indiana
6) Iowa
7) Nebraska.

Reason for increase

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan attributes the increase to “The hard work of America’s educators, families, communities and students." While Duncan and others admit there is still room for improvement, credit needs to be given to all those who contributed to the success.
