These Programs Help Low Income Women Get Affordable Infertility Treatments

Low income couple

About 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the United States between the ages 15-44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There are many types of treatments that can help, but very often low-income women cannot afford it, leaving them disadvantaged when it comes to opportunities to start a family. Fortunately, some agencies are offering help.

How agencies are helping low-income women

Many of the options for women who have difficulty getting pregnant include in vitro fertilization (IVF), where the fertilization occurs outside the womb, but it is expensive, costing as much as $12,000. Low-income women cannot afford the treatment. However, an organization called The Tinina Q Cade Foundation (Cade Foundation) was created in 2005 to help provide financial assistance and emotional support for low-income infertile families. The Maryland-based organization works with other fertility clinics and holds fundraisers that will enable them to help more families.

Other types of support

Not every women needs IVF. Each women is evaluated according to their own health and personal circumstances. Sometimes infertility can be corrected with the right medication. But organizations such as the Cade Foundation, and others like the Los Angeles-based Baby Quest Foundation, are offering grants and other financial assistance to give low-income families more options when it comes to infertility.

Most insurance plans will not cover infertility treatments; only about 15 U.S. states require some level of coverage by insurance companies. But many advocates for low-income couples who cannot conceive are pushing for insurance companies to reconsider.
