Local Nonprofit Celebrates Another Year of Giving Scholarships to Low-Income Students

Central Scholarship Program

Every year since 2012, this non-profit organization gives one deserving student a $30,000 loan forgiveness scholarship. The scholarship is open to students residing in Maryland who are from low-income families. For many, the scholarship meant the difference between going to college and not going to college.

Central Scholarship was founded in 1924 and is based in Owings Mills, Maryland. The founders wanted to improve the lives of people in Maryland by generating charitable funds that could be used for the advancement of people with dreams of better lives. In 2012, they extended their services to include making college more affordable for low-income families in Maryland.

Making a difference

For many scholarship recipients, the scholarship enabled them to attend college, even becoming the first person in their family to do so. Many like Angela Anthony of Warwick in Cecil County, had to work their way through college, in Anthony's case, working 20 to 30 hours per week as a hostess at a truck stop and as a van driver. The scholarship also helps tremendously in reducing the amount of stress that often comes from education debt.

Central Scholarship depends on donors to fund the scholarships every year. Students interested in applying must have a GPA of 2.0 or above, be a Maryland resident for at least one year or live within 200 miles of Baltimore City, Maryland.
