Low Income Housing In Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City Low Income HousingThe American dream of owning your own home is alive and well in Kansas City with generous programs for low-income qualifying families to find and purchase affordable homes. Through the Kansas City Dream Home program, a first-time homebuyer family of four, for example, with income at or below $57,850 can get a forgivable loan of up to 20% of the sales price of a home (ten percent is forgiven each year for ten years) up to $20,000 to purchase a home at or below $150,000 within the city limits of Kansas City.

The Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP) provides assistance to state and local governments to acquire and redevelop foreclosed properties that might otherwise become sources of abandonment and blight within their communities. With grants from the federal government, Kansas City can purchase foreclosed or abandoned homes to rehabilitate, sell, lease or redevelop.

All activities funded by NSP must benefit low- and moderate-income persons whose income does not exceed 120 percent of the area median income. Contact information regarding qualifications and application processes are available at www.kcmo.org.

In addition, the state of Missouri has established the Missouri Housing Development Commission which has invested more than $4 billion to construct, renovate and preserve affordable housing.  It also funds home loans to qualified first-time homebuyers which is financed through the sale of tax-exempt notes and bonds.

Other low income housing programs offered and managed through the Commission include federal HOME funds, HUD Section 8 rental assistance, and the Missouri Housing Trust Fund that provides emergency housing assistance to very low-income Missouri residents.
