Low Income Housing In New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans Low Income HousingHousing is a particular challenge for the city of New Orleans where over 200,000 homes and apartments were affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  In September 2001, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced it would award New Orleans and the Housing Authority of New Orleans (HANO) $30.5 million to rebuild neighborhoods and provide housing for New Orleans neighborhoods such as Iberville and Treme whose poverty levels are at 52 percent.  New Orleans is one of only five cities throughout the nation receiving this federal Choice Neighborhoods Initiative grant.

HUD Section 8 Housing provides federally-subsidized rental assistance for low income families, elderly and the disabled.  In addition, the city has a variety of HANO-owned public housing  options. HANO has introduced a new website called HANO Housing Choice Connect that allows residents to search through available rental properties to find a home suitable for them.  See details at www.hano.org.

Other area organizations have joined the effort to provide affordable housing for New Orleans' low-income families. One organization is Providence Community Housing dedicated to building 7,000 single-family homes and apartments for victims of Katrina.

With the help of a $10.5 million loan from HANO, this organization was able to complete 134 rental apartment units in 2011.  Their goal is to build a total of 900 rental units and 600 for-sale units. More details and information on how to qualify for these low income housing programs is available at www.providencecommunityhousing.org.
