Low Income Housing In Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City Low Income HousingOklahoma City Housing Authority owns and manages public housing designed to meet the needs of low income families as well as the elderly.  The amount of rent paid is based on family size and income with no more than 30% of monthly household income going toward rent.  Pictures of available properties as well as instructions on how to apply are available online at www.ochanet.org.  If residents lease after the 5th of the month, the first month's rent is free.

HUD Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program is also available.  Low income housing is available from private landlords who participate in this program and receive federal funds that enable them to keep the rent low. HUD income guidelines apply, and residents pay only 30-40% of their income towards rent; the rest is paid by HUD.

In addition, Section 8 Housing residents can sign up for an optional program called Family Self-Sufficiency that establishes an escrow account into which any income increase is deposited over a five-year period.  At the end of the five years, the resident receives the accrued funds.  The program is designed to help residents with job training, education and personal development that will teach them to become self-sufficient.

The Section 8 Homeownership Program is for first-time homebuyers who have participated in the Housing Choice Voucher program for one year.  It provides monthly homeownership assistance toward mortgage payments if the resident has a good rental payment record and annual income of $14,500.  In addition, homeownership opportunities are available through Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity. Newly constructed homes can be purchased by low-income families at cost and no interest or down payment but must be willing to donate their own time to the construction of the home.  Income guidelines also apply and can be viewed at www.cohfh.org.
