Low Income Housing In San Antonio, Texas

San Antonio Low Income HousingThe city of San Antonio has affordable and low income housing available to three categories of residents:  Extremely Low (30% of area median income), Very Low (50% of area median income), and Low (80% of area median income).  Median income in San Antonio is $59,900.  Through the San Antonio Housing Authority (SHA), several choices in affordable housing is are available.

Public housing consists of properties owned by SHA that gives housing preference to low-income residents who are only required to pay 30% of their household income towards rent; the rest is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant money.  HUD Section 8 Choice Housing Voucher program operates similarly except available properties are owned by private landlords who participate in the federal subsidized program.

Home ownership is also available to low- and moderate-income families (30-80% of area median income) through two programs.  The Public Housing Ownership Program allows qualifying families to purchase a $72-85,000 SHA home and receive up to $20,000 assistance with down payment and closing costs.  This assistance is in the form of a ten-year forgivable second mortgage.  Families already on the HUD Section 8 rental-assistance program can also purchase a home under the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Homeownship Program.  With a 20-year mortgage, they can apply their voucher to a mortgage for 15 years instead of rent.  More information on these programs are available at www.saha.org

If you're willing to help build your own home, another possibility for homeownership is available to San Antonio residents through Habitat for Humanity.  This non-profit organization builds houses for low-income families through private donations of time, materials and money.  Under this program, qualifying families can buy an affordable home with no down payment and a 0% interest loan if their income is 25-60% of the area median income.  Read more information at www.habitatsa.org.
