Savannah Low Income HousingSince 1938, the Housing Authority of Savannah has been working to provide more affordable housing choices for its low-income citizens.  Public housing owned and operated by the Authority is available as well as privately-owned housing that subsidizes rent for low-income tenants.  Both programs operate according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) guidelines pertaining to qualifying income and household size.

In Savannah, there are three qualifying levels of low income housing:  Extremely Low (30% of area median income), Very Low (50% of area median income), and Low (80% of area median income).  Median income for Savannah is $59,000.  Households pay only 30% of their monthly household income towards rent; the difference is paid through federal funding from HUD. 

 

Mixed-housing neighborhoods, which integrate low-income housing with market-rate housing, is available through the federal HOPE VI grant awarded to Savannah.  Rental units, townhouses and single-family homes to rent or purchase offers a wide mix of choices for qualifying families.  HOPE VI grants allow cities like Savannah the opportunity to revitalize distressed neighborhoods and offer them at affordable prices to low-income residents.  Find out more about these programs at www.savannahpha.com

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that works on a partnership basis to build new homes for qualifying, low-income families.  The partnership begins with donations of time, money and materials from the community and also from the families who must also participate in building their home (350 hours are required).  In return, they are able to purchase a home with no money down and 0% interest on the mortgage.  More details, including income guidelines, are available at www.habitatsavannah.org.
