Low Income Housing In St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis Low Income HousingThe St. Louis Housing Authority (SLHA) manages low-income housing programs for St. Louis low-income residents.  Affordable and low income housing is made possible through grants and funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  Therefore, the programs operate under HUD federal guidelines.  SLHA-owned public housing is available to families meeting the income guidelines found on SLHA's website at www.slha.org.

A family of three, for example, is limited to income at or below $50,050 in order to qualify.  Public housing programs allow residents to pay 30-40% of their monthly income towards rent.  The rest is funded by HUD.

St. Louis also has a federally-funded program called Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program for very-low income residents.  Using the family of three example above, their income limitation must not exceed 50% of area median income or $31,300 to qualify for rent subsidy under this program.   Properties are privately-owned, offering more housing options for low-income residents.  Since demand usually exceeds supply, there is a waiting list for applicants.

St. Louis is also fortunate to have an additional resource available to low-income residents for homeownership through Habitat for Humanity.  Through donations, Habitat for Humanity has been able to build over 300 homes in the area and help more than 1,000 people afford their own home.  Income guidelines apply and can be found at www.habitatstl.org.  Families must be first-time homebuyers and also contribute 350 hours on site building their own home.  But the rewards are worth it in an affordable home purchased with no down payment required and a 0% interest mortgage.
