The new low-income housing program is for current homeowners whose homes are old and in a state of disrepair. Qualifying families must have incomes at or below 80% of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) income guidelines. And at least one family member must have been employed for two years full-time. Once approved, homeowners help build their home along with unpaid volunteer interns.
The straw bale insulating properties provide low utility costs for homeowners. Homeowners not only share in the construction process but are also taught how to maintain and care for their straw bale home. The homes are typically built in about four months.
Costs are kept low by using re-cycled materials and other building materials that are donated. Community Rebuilds also puts homeowners in touch with low interest loans, and the company utilizes simple architectural designs which also keeps the cost down.
