Government Budget Cuts Especially Hurt... The Elderly and Children
They call it "The Sequester Program," but there is no way to sugarcoat the fact that the federal government has approved budget cuts totaling $1 trillion, beginning in 2013. Sadly, many of these programs will affect children and the elderly, groups who are the most vulnerable and who need government programs to survive. Here are just some of the programs included in the cuts.
Children's Program:
* Child care programs - programs for disadvantaged children whose low-income parents need the services in order to work
* Vaccines for children - shots that protect against measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, whooping cough, influenza, and Hepatitis B
* Headstart - education services for children
* Title 1 Education Funds - funding to schools for individual instruction, after school programs, and other programs for disadvantaged students
* IDEA - special education program funding program that provides support to preschool and school-aged students with disabilities
* Work study programs - that help students pay for college
Elderly Programs:
* Meals on Wheels - federally-assisted program that provides nutritious meals to home-bound senior citizens
* HUD Choice Voucher System - provides government rental assistance to very low-income families
* Mental health programs - provide government funding of programs for seriously emotionally disturbed adults and children
These are just a few of the types of programs that will be affected. Each state will be impacted at different levels. Residents of each state may go online to see how the budget cuts will affect social services in their state.
