New York Gives $16.5 Million for Affordable Housing Construction Across the State

New York Awards Grants Totaling $16.5 Million for Affordable Housing

New York state's governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced that an additional 240 new units of affordable housing will soon be built across the state, thanks to a grant of more than $16.5 million. The grants represent the latest awards from a $190 million fund that was announced by the Governor early in 2014 to support affordable housing across New York.

Where the grants went

The funding enabled the state to offer grants to projects that aligned with the state's housing goals of revitalization and economic development, mixed-income and mixed-use development, workforce housing, and affordable housing preservation. Some of the areas that will benefit from increased affordable housing includes Bronx County, Batavia, Rochester, and Union.

According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition who tracks statistics on rental units affordable and available to both extremely low income households and very low income households, the lack of affordable housing affects just about every state in the nation. New York is not the only state that is in desperate need of more housing for the poor; states such as California and Washington are in the same dire straits.

Projects ready to go

According to Governor Cuomo, the affordable housing projects are ready to go and will provide much-needed housing for households who earn between 60 and 120 percent of area median income, and for people with special needs. As the Governor commented, “All New Yorkers should have a safe and decent place to call home, and today we’re taking another step toward making that goal a reality.”
