Low-income residents of Chicago will benefit in many ways from a recent grant of $231,000 from the Chicago Community Trust. The purpose of the grant was to increase affordable rental housing for low- and moderate-income families in Chicago.
The grant money was awarded to several non-profit and government agencies who will use the money to create more rental housing for low- and moderate-income families and people with disabilities. Chicago Community Trust is the area's largest donor of grant money and supports efforts to provide rental and permanent housing for the homeless and those with disabilities.
One of the organizations receiving grants was the Supportive Housing Providers Association which plans to develop community housing for people with disabilities which will allow them to live in a community setting rather than an institution. Other organizations have similar plans that benefit people with disabilities, the homeless, providing affordable housing for low-income renters, and upgrading federal subsidized housing. The grants range from $10,000 to $100,000.
The Chicago Community Trust has been in existence for 97 years and is known for their work in uniting donors to help meet the needs of Chicago area communities. In 2011 alone, they gave over $100 million in grants to local non-profit organizations. The grants benefited communities with increased low-income housing, help for schools, building health centers, and other programs that had a positive impact on the community.
