Google's Free Gift To Low Income Families: Fiber (But not that kind of fiber, silly!)
Multinational technology giant Google is taking another giant step to ensure more people have access to the benefits of the Internet. Internet access is out of reach for many low-income families, so Google has offered it for free to low-income residents living in public housing.
Google Fiber
It's called Google Fiber, and it is now available in eight cities: Atlanta, Austin, Charlotte, Kansas City, Nashville, Provo, Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and Salt Lake City. Bringing the free Internet access to low-income families means they, too, can now use the web to search for jobs, information, and connect with other people.
Kudos to President Obama
Google Fiber is being offered as part of the ConnectHome program, President Obama's new program to help expand high speed broadband to more families across the country. ConnectHome is designed to launch in 27 cities; Google Fiber will provide the free Internet service to 8 cities which are Google Fiber markets.
In addition to offering free Internet services, Google also wants to work with community groups to create computer labs to increase computer skills training in each of Google Fiber's host cities.
