Union County, Indiana Completes New Housing Project That Will Benefit 20 Families

The Green River Area Development District (GRADD) serves the counties of Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Union and Webster in western Kentucky to identify opportunities to improve housing for residents and implement programs that meet those needs. It also supports the Green River Housing Corporation, which funds several programs to help low- to moderate- income families.

Recently, the Green River Housing Corporation (GRHC) completed five duplexes for low- and moderate-income households in Union County. The project was made possible through $654,000 in Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) funds. Twenty low-income families will be able to call these affordable duplexes home. Five of the ten units are currently leased.

More housing is planned in the next several months. The next project, called Phase II, will be funded through KHC’s HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) and Small Multifamily Affordable Loan (SMAL) programs, as well as through private funding, labor and materials.

The HOME program is specifically designed to produce affordable housing for low-income families. It is the largest federal block grant program of its kind. Smaller projects are funded by the SMAL program, which is a state program that specializes in affordable rental housing for low-income families.
