4 Ways President Obama Plans to Help Black People in America in 2015
As the White House eases into the second fiscal quarter of 2014, the President is already looking way ahead by formulating a budget proposal for 2015. Entitled Opportunity for All: Supporting African American Families, the budget outlines programs that are designed to improve the lives of black Americans.
Some of the programs include:
#1 - Support for Minority Businesses - a total of $28 million has been budgeted to the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) to fund services such as counseling, training, and technical assistance to minority business owners. The budget money will boost job creation, improve local economies, and help minority business owners take their businesses into the global market.
#2 - Protecting Civil Rights - through funding of the Department of Justice, Obama intends to step up protection of civil rights for black and ethnic Americans. This includes preventing discrimination in the workplace by enforcing civil rights laws through the Equal Opportunity Commission and the Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs.
#3 - Education - $75 million has been included in the budget to support minority serving institutions of higher education and improving college access for minority youth. The plan is to offer more grants and reduce costs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic serving institutions so more minorities can afford a college education.
#4 - Juvenile justice - improving the juvenile justice system by reducing ethnic and racial disparities. In addition, Obama wants to offer incentives to states to get juveniles back in school after being incarcerated, and providing employment services for at-risk youth and counseling, job training and drug treatment to former prisoners.
