President Obama Launches New Affordable Baby Diaper Program

President Obama Holding Baby

BabyCenter, a member of the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, recently surveyed more than 1,000 new moms. Among other baby costs, the average cost for diapers is about $72 per month, or up to $900 per year. That's for one child. How are low-income parents supposed to afford this? President Obama has a new program that will help.

President Obama's new baby diaper plan

It's called "the diaper divide," and it refers to the difference between what low-income parents pay and what higher-income parents pay for diapers. Sure, buying in bulk saves money, and that is often what higher-income parents do. But low-income parents often cannot afford the initial payment for bulk quantities, even though in the long run it will save them money.

President Obama has proposed a program that engages the help of online retailers, diaper manufacturers and non-profits. Many companies such as Huggies have donated diapers to the National Diaper Bank Network, a diaper bank that distributes diapers to families in need throughout the U.S. Jet.com, an online retailer of diapers and other baby products, has worked with the makers of Cuties diapers to manufacture more affordable diapers and even make them available to non-profits at no cost for shipping.

How the program helps parents

Other companies have already pledged their support, pumping millions more affordable diapers into the hands of low-income parents. Now, many more parents will not have to make the unbelievable choice of either paying for food and utilities or keeping their babies dry and healthy.
